the dog days of summer with the polymer clay smooshers guild

The dog days of summer.  The period of time between July 3 and August 11.  The time when the weather can only be called sultry.

The ancients named this time period.  During these weeks, Sirius, the dog star, was at its most prominent.  Both ancient Egyptians and Romans believed that Sirius added its heat to the sun’s causing the temperatures to rise.  Okay, so we all know the real reason for the heat, humidity, and haze is the Earth’s tilt (I think that’s right), but I prefer the ancient version.  (Did you ever pick up a hot doggy?  Regardless of size, he/she will double your body heat!)

Please don’t react to the heat by indulging in fond reminiscences of last winter’s ice storms.  Be practical.  Draw the drapes.  Turn on the ceiling fan(s), turn off unneeded lights, fight the dogs to sit on the air conditioning vent and think cool thoughts with  help from the Polymer Clay Smooshers Guild:

ColtPixy‘s singing snowman- happy and cute –  will help.  Or how about this adorable family of penguins by Clay Cat Shop?  Cheerful and loving, they’re bound to lift your spirits!   But wait,  you may say, those little sweeties make me think about winter and I love summer!  Well, how about a little mermaid…on her own island….

Cat’s Wire‘s sculpture is a celebration of sand and sun!  (But in a good way…no dogs here.)

So, make some sun tea, do your best to stay cool and don’t forget: come this winter’s storms, we will be fondly reminiscing about the dog days of summer.

Another good way to stay cool?  Shop online at our Christmas in July sale. Check out our blog for participating shops.  Just a thought…..
